The World Almanac has information on the larger nations of the world, especially from the 1890s editions. Before the 1890s it is focused more on the United States. Click here for links to the various editions online.
The Statesman's Yearbook is a detailed reference work for all the countries in the world. It has been published since 1864 and includes information on sovereign states as well as colonies and other territories. It actually is in the 1865 edition despite the fact that the Confederacy never achieved formal diplomatic recognition by any country.
