This is inspired by the Fallout setting, in which 10 mm Auto is adopted by the United States military. It's possible .45 Super was adopted by the military in Fallout too, as the .45 Auto cases are suitably strengthened to allow the Courier to handload them in Fallout: New Vegas while in real life .45 Super cases are produced by cutting down .451 Detonics Magnum cases.

Obviously the military was only looking at 9 mm pistols in the 1984 pistol trials, but what if the United States had opened the competition up to other cartridges such as .45 Super, 10 mm Auto/Lite, or .40 Smith & Wesson? .45 caliber is still used by some units of the United States military and .40 Smith & Wesson is a common civilian and police cartridge, but would they be suitable for standard military applications?
